The Ohara School was founded by Unshin Ohara in the late nineteenth century when Japan opened itself to western influences. He created a new form of Ikebana called Moribana (literally “piled-up flowers”). The two basic forms in Ohara Ikebana are Moribana, using low, shallow containers, and Heika, using tall, cylindrical vases. Both forms emphasize seasonal qualities, natural growth processes and the beauty of the natural environment. Today, the Ohara School is led by Fifth Headmaster Hiroki Ohara and claims more than one million members worldwide.
